UGA postgame wrap-up

Getting ready to leave Sanford Stadium, where the cleaning crew seemed to be amused by a big sprinkler shooting high into into the sky to water the turf after the game.

Some comments and notes after the 55-7 UGA win over Louisiana-Lafayette:
--Louisiana-Lafayette coach Rickey Bustle certainly was impressed: “Georgia is a heck of a football team. They have great talent at a lot of positions.”

--Aaron Murray said the fans were ready despite the early kickoff: "The Dawg Walk was pretty cool. There were a lot of people. I wasn’t expecting that many people being like at 10:20.”

--Murray threw a gimme interception up for grabs that Lance Kelly dropped in the end zone with 24 seconds left in the first half.
That play and Murray's 16-yard touchdown run to end the first half that could have left Georgia with no points if he didn't score didn't jazz up Richt.

Gameday Blog: UGA (minus Green) vs. La.-Lafayette

Greetings from Sanford Stadium, where receiver A.J. Green won't play today.

In case you didn’t hear the news earlier this morning, he’s being held out of the game “pending a ruling from the NCAA clarifying his status,” according to Georgia.

The Bulldogs are already missing two suspended players on offense: running back Washaun Ealey and receiver Tavarres King. Green, Ealey and King were hanging out together on the field in jersey and shorts while other players warmed-up.

Georgia’s wide receivers available now are Kris Durham, Marlon Brown, Israel Troupe, Rantavious Wooten and Logan Gray. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo sounded like freshman receiver Michael Bennett would not play today, but we’ll see if Green being out impacts that.

Some pregame notes:
--Inside linebacker Richard Samuel is on crutches with a heavy brace on his right knee. He already was a no-go, but doesn’t look like he’d be back for next week.

UGA wants to `Respect the football' against opportunistic Ragin' Cajuns

Aaron Murray isn’t making his collegiate debut against an SEC defense on Saturday, but the Louisiana-Lafayette team that Georgia's starting quarterback will face Saturday was certainly opportunistic last season.

“The number one thing that jumps out to me is the number of interceptions they had last year,” Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. “They like to pressure. They play zone behind it where if you get pressure and get a bad call, you can get some interceptions. They have a knack for making plays and creating turnovers.”

The Ragin’ Cajuns’ 16 interceptions last year tied for 23rd in the nation. They had 13 in their six victories. Their projected starters in the secondary this year had 10 of those interceptions.

Georgia threw 17 interceptions last season, contributing to a turnover margin that ranked 118th in the nation.

Richt still can't talk about Green

Georgia coach Mark Richt said Wednesday night that he still can’t say for sure that star receiver A.J. Green will be able to play in Saturday’s season opener.

The question has lingered since the NCAA sent an e-mail in July to Georgia asking to interview one player.

Green told the Athens Banner-Herald on July 21 that Georgia officials asked him if he had attended an agent-sponsored party in Miami on Memorial Day Weekend. He told them he did not.

So was Richt was asked Wednesday: “Are you expecting A.J. to play Saturday?”

“A.J. Harmon? Yeah,” Richt said referring to the offensive lineman.

“Green,” he was told.”

“You know I can’t talk about that,” Richt said. “It’s a good try, though. I don’t know the answer to anything other than I’m not supposed to talk about the situation. And I really don’t know.”

Post-practice tidbits

Some tidbits from post-practice interviews at Georgia tonight:

--Offensive line coach Stacy Searels on Trinton Sturdivant, returning from a second season-ending knee surgery: “We don’t have to work him in quick right now. I would like to see him play Saturday and get some quality reps and get some confidence.”

--I asked receiver A.J. Green if he had any doubt that he’ll be able to play Saturday. Here’s what he said: “No. I don’t know. I can’t say anything.”
Green has said that Georgia officials in July asked him if he had attended an agent sponsored party in Miami on Memorial Day Weekend. He told them he did not.
The NCAA sent a letter of inquiry to Georgia asking to interview one player.

--Running back Caleb King on if he’s expecting a bigger workload with Washaun Ealey suspended for at least one game. “I guess. I really don’t know the rotation yet.”

--There are now four true freshmen that Georgia coaches have said will play Saturday.

Safety dance: Jakar Hamilton is starting at safety

The news that Nick Williams would start alongside Bacarri Rambo at safety lasted only for five or six hours.

Jakar Hamilton said after practice today that, no, he had been told he would start at safety. That contradicted the depth chart that Georgia released today.

“I’m glad to see that I’ve earned the starting position,” said Hamilton, a transfer from Georgia Military College. “I’m running with the ones now. Coach (Todd) Grantham came and told me I earned my starting position. I’m happy to be back where I wanted to be.”

Hamilton said he’ll be the free safety and Rambo will play strong safety.

Coach Mark Richt confirmed after practice tonight that Hamilton and Rambo will be the starters for Saturday's opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Hamilton was talking about more than just on the field matters.

New UGA AD McGarity on football arrests, NCAA inquiry

New Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity spent about 20 minutes this afternoon addressing some questions from a few reporters on his first full day in the office.

I’ll have a story for Tuesday’s newspaper and online, but here is what McGarity had to say about a couple of issues he will have to deal with early on the job.

--McGarity addressed the eight football arrests this offseason:
“I’m going to learn about our structure, what we have set up as far as education of student-athletes,” McGarity said. “I want to learn exactly why is this happening? Is there a specific reason?”

New UGA depth chart lists Wood starting DE, N.Williams starting SS

Georgia has released its first updated depth chart since before preseason practices began.
A few things that jumped out to me:
--The starting defensive line has Brandon Wood at left defensive end, DeAngelo Tyson at nose and Demarcus Dobbs at right defensive end. Tyson has been working at both nose and end.
--Nick Williams is listed as the starting strong safety and Bacarri Rambo is the starter at free safety. Jakar Hamilton should be getting plenty of work in the safety rotation.
--Akeem Dent is indeed listed as the starting “Mike” linebacker with Christian Robinson at “Mo”. Dent missed most of preseason practices coming back from surgery for a broken toe.
--Orson Charles is the starter at tight end, ahead of Aron White.
--As A.J. Green said, Branden Smith is listed as the first punt returner.

Georgia adds Buffalo to 2012 schedule, Ga. Southern `tentatively' scheduled

Georgia will open the 2012 football season against Buffalo and is tentatively scheduled to play Georgia Southern that season, UGA associate athletic director Arthur Johnson said this afternoon.

The game against Buffalo is the first ever meeting between the schools and is scheduled for Sept. 1, 2012 in Sanford Stadium. Georgia is paying Buffalo $975,000 for the game, matching the 2013 game against North Texas as the highest payouts the school has ever guaranteed. Buffalo, which plays in the Mid-American
Conference, went 5-7 last season under former coach Turner Gill.

Georgia Southern and Georgia would meet again in a familiar every four year pattern. They have played in 2000, 2004 and 2008. Johnson said the Georgia Southern game would be played in November the week before the annual game with Georgia Tech.

The Bulldogs nonconference schedule in 2012 also includes a game at Louisville on Sept. 15.

Loran Smith won't be UGA sideline reporter, but continues on pregame show

“Whaddayagot, Loran?”

Georgia fans heard legendary radio voice Larry Munson ask Loran Smith that question down on the field for more than three decades during Bulldogs football games.

Munson retired during the 2008 season and now Smith will no longer be Georgia’s sideline reporter.

Georgia is replacing Smith as sideline reporter with Chuck Dowdle, the former WSB TV sports director who already does postgame locker room interviews. Smith will continue in his role as co-host of Georgia’s pregame radio show.

“I’m happy to still be involved with the pregame show and I’m happy that I’ve had 36 years,” Smith said Thursday night. “I’ve had great fun. I have a lot of great memories in the past and look for more in the future. I think Mark Richt is going to provide that.”

Dowdle also hosts the TV show “Inside Georgia Football With Mark Richt,” along with his locker room duties.
