Minor foot injury for Thompkins; UGA-N.Dame hoops in Orlando

Georgia junior forward Trey Thompkins’ summer with the USA Basketball Select Team is over because of what the school described as a minor foot injury.

Thompkins has scrapped plans to train for a week against the USA National Team in New York starting on Monday.

“Our trainers recommended that he rest it before school starts,” Georgia team spokesman Tim Hix said.

UGA starts classes on Aug. 16.

Thompkins received good reviews going up against the national team for the USA World Championship trials in Las Vegas in late July.

News on hoops schedule (including opener) and Trey's trip to Vegas

Georgia’s 2010-11 men’s basketball schedule isn’t yet out but its season opener will be against Mississippi Valley State at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12 in Stegeman Coliseum.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference school announced that date on its website. The Delta Devils went 8-21 last season.

Georgia will also get a visit this coming season from Xavier, according to a tweet from Musketeers coach Chris Mack earlier this month.

“Get your plane tickets to Athens, GA for February X fans,” he wrote.

Georgia coach Mark Fox said he didn’t know if the contract with Xavier was signed yet, but said that “it’s in the works.”

The pairings for the Old Spice Classic on Thanksgiving weekend in Orlando have not yet been announced, but it looks like a Notre Dame-Georgia matchup in the opening round, according to a tweet from the Irish’s beat writer for the South Bend Tribune (h/t Georgia Sports Blog).

Tuesday tidbits: Frontline focus; football broadcast changes; A.J.'s star power

Trey Thompkins won’t be part of Thursday night’s NBA draft after sticking around Georgia for another season.

Georgia basketball coach Mark Fox is eyeing big men on the recruiting trail to replace Thompkins—the Bulldogs’ unanimous All-SEC selection--and rising seniors Jeremy Price and Chris Barnes after next season.

“Trey likely, if he has a good year, might be gone,” Fox said earlier this month. “I think for right now we have two seniors up front. We’re going to continue to add a couple of more big frontline players. That’s got to be an issue for us. The one thing we’re probably comfortable is that we have three point guards on our team that are all still going to be back the following year. We need to get some wings and some shooting just like everybody to add some pieces to the puzzle.”

Other SEC schools-not Georgia-sweated draft deadline

Some SEC basketball programs had to sweat it out over the weekend. Not Georgia.

The NCAA’s deadline for underclassmen to withdraw from the NBA draft was Saturday.

Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie took away any suspense when they each declared weeks ago they were staying put for their junior seasons.

“One thing that I was really pleased with Trey and Travis is that I said `Listen, let’s not leave this story with the nonsense, let’s listen to the general managers, let’s be balanced in your approach and make a mature, educated decision,’” Georgia coach Mark Fox said recently. “I didn’t have to recruit them to come back. I mean they did that. They handled it, both of them, very well. Glad to have them back.”

In case you didn’t hear, Florida’s Alex Tyus and Mississippi State’s Ravern Johnson withdrew their names, but they were more the exception than the rule in the SEC.

Thompkins says he's returning for junior season at UGA

Georgia forward Trey Thompkins is returning for his junior season, bypassing this year's NBA draft.

“Don’t worry, coach. I’m coming back,” Thompkins said when he announced his decision Thursday night at the UGA Tipoff Club’s end of season banquet.

The revelation set off a rousing ovation from the crowd of about 200 at the Athens Country Club and surprised even coach Mark Fox, who had made mention of the big decision facing him.

“God bless you, Trey,” Fox responded.

Later, Thompkins said he wasn’t sure if he was going to announce the decision that he made late Wednesday night.

“I figured it might be nice to announce it,” Thompkins said. “Coach just made it so easy for me to announce it.”

Fox had reminded Thompkins that assistant coach Stacey Palmore earlier in the banquet had said that he was looking forward to having Thompkins back next year. "Coach Palmore was calling you out about next year," Fox said. "I'm not going to do that."

Leslie decides to remain at Georgia, Thompkins still considering NBA

Georgia forward Travis Leslie has decided to return for his junior season and won't enter the NBA draft.

Leslie had told the Athens Banner-Herald that was his plan back in early March, but had held discussions with coach Mark Fox about the possibility of entering the draft since the end of the season.

Leslie announced his decision this afternoon in a release issued by the school.

"After talking about it with my family and coaches, I believe it's the best decision for me," Leslie said. "I enjoy being at Georgia and being part of the Georgia program. I think we have a chance to have a great season next year. Right now, I just want to continue working hard to improve as a player and help us become a great program at Georgia."

Fox said earlier today that he’s had “a lot of communication,” with Leslie about his options and he “is very grounded.”

Thompkins unanimous first team All-SEC pick

Georgia forward Trey Thompkins was named today a first-team All-Southeastern Conference pick by the league's coaches, the first Bulldog to receive such an honor since Jarvis Hayes in 2003.

The 6-foot-10 sophomore is second in the SEC in scoring at 17.7 points per game and fourth in rebounding at 8.2. He averaged 12.6 points and 7.4 rebounds last year as a freshman.

Thompkins was one of five unanimous selections on the eight-man first team.

“I think Thompkins is a special offensive player,” Florida coach Billy Donovan said last week. “He is really, really terrific. He can score inside. He can score outside. He can make turnaround jumpers, jump hooks. He puts it on the floor. He does a lot of different things. …Not only in our league but in the country, I would be hard pressed to find too many guys more skilled and talented and gifted then he is.”
