Murray on Stafford, Greene on Murray

We have our college football preview issue coming out on Sunday in the newspaper and online.

Look for a story about Mark Richt as he enters year No. 10 as Georgia's coach. There also will be features on new starting quarterback Aaron Murray and junior star receiver A.J. Green.

Murray spent time this offseason picking the brain of former Georgia quarterback David Greene. They even sat down to watch QB film together.

Murray also got a chance to hang out with former Bulldogs quarterback Matthew Stafford, the Detroit Lions starting QB and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft who spends time in Athens in the offseason.

“He came out to a 7-on-7 practice we had in the summer and he was out there throwing with us. He was talking to me about certain things,” Murray said. “He’s definitely another guy who’s open to helping me out, too, which is nice. All the guys are willing to help the young guys, which is pretty cool.”

Stafford offered Murray some pointers.

Conditioning accident `nothing bad' for QB Murray

Georgia will enter preseason camp on Monday with just three scholarship quarterbacks on its roster.

About the last thing it can afford is to lose starter Aaron Murray to injury.

It’s a good thing for the Bulldogs that what Murray described as a “conditioning accident” left the redshirt freshman sporting only a shiny purple bruise under his left eye this week. He said it won’t keep him off the practice field.

Murray said it happened during an agility drill on Tuesday called `Chase the Rabbit.’

“One person has a belt connected to another person with a belt and the belt can break,” Murray said. “If you’re the chaser, you don’t want the belt to break and if you’re the rabbit you want to juke the guy behind you and have the belt break. I was the chaser and I got too close at the start to the guy and it went straight to the cheek.”

When you’re the starting quarterback at Georgia, even minor injuries will get attention.

Murray wants to `prove myself to these guys'

Life as Georgia’s No. 1 quarterback for Aaron Murray brought words of congratulations on campus today from fellow students and teammates.

“It’s pretty cool, it’s exciting,” Murray said this afternoon. “It’s definitely something I’ve always looked forward to in taking this job. I’ve just got to keep working and make sure that I solidify my spot for that first game of the year.”

Georgia returned every starter on offense except at quarterback.

Now, the redshirt freshman from Tampa, who is ahead of junior Logan Gray on the depth chart entering the preseason, hopes his teammates will follow him as he takes on the high-profile gig.

Murray is Georgia's No. 1 QB (W/DEPTH CHART and updated quotes)

Georgia has a new No. 1 quarterback: Aaron Murray.

As most expected, the redshirt freshman from Tampa, Fla., was placed ahead of redshirt junior Logan Gray on the Bulldogs’ post-spring depth chart released on Thursday.

In a much-talked about, much-watched position battle, Murray is the favorite to start the Sept. 4 season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.

“We see Murray ahead of Logan right now, but by no means does that guarantee a starting position in the first ballgame,” coach Mark Richt said. “It’s just a matter of, on a consistent basis, he performed better than Logan at this point. It’s the usual things: accuracy, decision-making, those types of things.”

Murray and Gray were part of a three-player quarterback competition this spring that lost a contender on Sunday when Zach Mettenberger, who threw two touchdowns in the G-Day game, was dismissed for violating team rules.

Richt was asked if Murray would have been No. 1 on the depth chart anyway.

Richt on quarterbacks: `These guys are on the ball’

Aaron Murray isn’t making much of the strong numbers he put up in Georgia’s first scrimmage as he prepares for the next one on Saturday

“It’s just one day,” Murray said. “We do scrimmages every day in practice. The (scrimmage) games are pretty much the biggest thing in spring, but those practices you just can’t go out there and loaf. They’re taking the spring as a whole in determining who’s going to be a starter, based on not our performance in three (scrimmage) games, but as practice for a month and how you do in handling team leadership and stuff like that.”

The redshirt freshman completed 10 of 15 passes for 125 yards with a touchdown and one interception last Saturday but said Tuesday he didn’t know if he helped himself or hurt himself in the Bulldogs’ competition to be the starting quarterback.

Zach Mettenberger completed 7 of 10 passes for 157 yards and a 65-yard touchdown pass.

Midweek Bulldog Fix: Murray, Samuel and others

Over at the Butts-Mehre building this afternoon for several football interviews.

Here are some tidbits from quarterback Aaron Murray, who will compete with Zach Mettenberger and Logan Gray for the starting job.

On competition at position: “I view it pretty much as anyone’s job to take right now. I’m looking forward to the spring and right now just going out there and working as hard as I can. It’s my goal to get that position. I’m going to work as hard as I can and try to work as hard as the other guys. I know they’re going to be going out there too, aiming for that job. It should be fun. It’s going to be interesting.”

On last season: "When I first came in, I was still fighting for that job. I wanted to play last year. Obviously that didn’t happen."

On his improvement in a year: "I’m more knolwedgable about the game, about defenses, about the playbook".

Freshmen quarterbacks get time to shine

Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger will make their Sanford Stadium debut with fans in the stands at Saturday’s G-Day game.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo doesn’t want his freshmen quarterbacks to be tight.

He said he will tell them `Just relax and have fun, and don’t be afraid to make a mistake. I want to see you play football.’

The Elite 11 high school quarterbacks have been co-bracketed all spring at No. 3 on the depth chart behind starter Joe Cox and backup Logan Gray.

Gray should get the most work in the scrimmage among the quarterbacks since he’ll be on the black team. Cox, Murray and Mettenberger will all play for the red team, which Bobo will coach, but the freshmen could play on both teams.

“Depending on how the game goes, I might throw one of the young guys over there in the second half,” Bobo said.

Meeting with new QBs Murray and Mettenberger

Georgia freshmen quarterbacks Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger took part in their first seven-on-seven drills this afternoon on the Woodruff practice fields.

The players were then made available to the media for the first time since enrolling earlier this month. Joe Cox also showed up to chat. Look for a story over the weekend, but for now here’s a rundown of some of what the players had to say.

The most striking comment came from Mettenberger, who is from Watkinsville and said he attended from 20 to 25 practices last season.

“Last year I was around a lot and the leadership wasn’t too great last year,” Mettenberger said. “I’ve been here three weeks and I already can tell that the leadership and the seniors, they are trying to win a championship again. They want to win an SEC championship. They want a spot to play in the national title.
