With his candidate of choice, Eric Johnson, out of the race, U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston is throwing his support behind Nathan Deal in the gubernatorial runoff.
"I encourage conservative Republicans in Southeast Georgia to join me in rallying behind Nathan Deal to be Georgia's next governor. For those who supported Eric Johnson, Nathan is the natural fit for the Aug. 10 runoff.
"As a member of Congress, Nathan earned a perfect score from the American Conservative Union which speaks volumes for his conservative record.
"On immigration, he introduced legislation and led the fight to end birthright citizenship. His citizenship verification law slashed Medicaid fraud, cutting Georgia's Medicaid rolls by 160,000 and saving our state millions.
"To fight higher taxes, he joined me in voting for the biggest tax cut in our nation's history, and I know he'll do the same in Georgia. According to the Tax Foundation, his plan for prosperity would boost Georgia's business climate from 29th to 16th.
"Nathan has been endorsed by the National Rifle Association, Georgia Right to Life and Newt Gingrich.
"I know Nathan is ready to hit the ground running and to tackle the challenges facing our state in the coming years. That's why I'm wholeheartedly endorsing him and why I hope Georgians across our state will join me in doing the same."
It’s not much of a surprise, Four of the six Georgia Republican congressmen who served with Deal – Paul Broun, Lynn Westmoreland, Phil Gingrey and John Linder – endorsed himearly on. Tom Price, who represents Karen Handel’s north Fulton County base, initially supported Deal but switched to Handel. Kingston backed Johnson; both men hail from Savannah.
Kingston’s endorsement should help Deal pick up the rural South Georgia voters he needs to add to his North Georgia base to counteract Handel’s strong showing in metro Atlanta. Kingston is an Athens native and remains popular here, so it should also help Deal build on the support he already has in the area from representing us in Congress for a few years.

Deal is not as corrupt,
Deal is not as corrupt, perhaps, as some other incumbents. He's had his share of problems.
I'd argue, though, his association with the status quo is the most pressing problem.
He was THERE through-out the years leading up to the financial crisis and played a go-along-get-along role as did most of the incumbents. It's unsurprising he's got support from other incumbent Congressmen, after all, as they say, "There is safety in numbers!" Surely Kingston, Broun, and some of the others are gambling November's election is not about turning-out incumbents but can be massaged into some sort of simple 'victory' for the GOP.
If anything, this will test the Tea Party crowd and their withering calls for fiscal sanity and ethical government; can they GOP hi-jack the sentiment and get back to doing mostly the same thing its been doing for many years? Can it fool the voters, once more, and 'say the right things' while business as usual goes on in Washington, DC, and the usual suspects burnish their credentials?
